This year's Hayden Tournament was a 6-a-side competition, and we entered two Real 60 U16 teams. The squads were split as evenly as possible, with a couple of new players joining each team. We were also grateful to have our U15 goalkeeper step up and play for the U16s throughout the day.
Karl took charge of the Whites, while Pete managed the Reds. Both teams were drawn into the same group – the highly competitive A Group.
Group Stage
The Reds got off to a difficult start against Fleetdown Orange. With several players still settling in and a few early nerves showing, they narrowly lost 1-0.
The Whites began their campaign in impressive fashion against Athenlay, producing an excellent performance to secure a convincing 3-0 victory.
Next up, the Reds faced Fleetdown Black. Any early nerves had disappeared, and the team produced a much more confident display, earning a deserved 2-0 win.
The Whites then took on Fleetdown Orange in a hard-fought contest. Despite creating opportunities, they were edged out 1-0.
Then both Real 60 teams faced each other. Friends off the pitch, but rivals on it! Both teams played with great commitment and sportsmanship in a closely contested match. The Whites eventually claimed victory thanks to a deflected goal.
Semi-Finals
Both Real 60 teams successfully progressed to the semi-finals.
The Reds faced Fleetdown Orange for a second time and showed just how much they had grown throughout the tournament. Putting their opening defeat behind them, they produced a disciplined performance and earned a 1-0 victory to book their place in the final.
The Whites met Fleetdown Black in a physical semi-final. Unfortunately, some poor challenges resulted in Roman being forced off injured. The game remained level and went to penalties.
Showing tremendous character, Roman insisted on returning to the pitch for the shootout. He stepped up to take the first penalty and calmly found the net. Goalkeeper Matthew then produced two outstanding saves to help the Whites secure their place in the final.
The Final
The final was an all-Real 60 affair, guaranteeing the club would lift the trophy regardless of the result.
Played in excellent spirit, chances were limited, with both goalkeepers making important saves when called upon. With neither side able to find a winner, the tournament was decided by penalties.
The Reds made a fantastic start to the shootout, racing into a 2-0 lead. However, Matthew, in goal for the Whites, had other ideas. He produced two superb saves to swing the momentum back in his team's favour.
The Whites held their nerve to complete a remarkable comeback and win the shootout 3-2, lifting the Hayden Tournament trophy.
Final Thoughts
A huge well done to every player who represented Real 60. Both teams showed excellent attitude, teamwork, determination, and sportsmanship throughout the day. It was fantastic to see new players settling in so quickly and contributing to the success of both teams.
Special mentions go to Roman for his bravery and determination after picking up an injury, and to Matthew for his outstanding goalkeeping performances, particularly in the knockout stages and announced player of the tournament.
To have both Real 60 teams reach the final was a brilliant achievement and something everyone involved should be extremely proud of.
