Double Lions Delight

Ben Bradley

u18s Lions Also Triumph at New Road Tournament

The Lions made the trip across to the island for what will be their final appearance at a tournament, with a few of the squad away on holiday.

Drawn in a very tough group, the lads performed superbly throughout. They showed great character in their opening game, coming from 2–0 down to earn a deserved 2–2 draw against a strong Vinters Park side. They then suffered a 2–0 defeat to Rustington Otters, who had travelled all the way from Brighton and went on to win the tournament overall.

The final group game saw the Lions secure a 1–0 victory over Chatham Town, leaving them third in the group and progressing to the Shield competition.

The Shield semi-final against another Chatham Town side was settled by an excellent finish from Charlie Woodman. Charlie calmly slotted home after being brought down from behind, and had the ball not found the back of the net, it would almost certainly have been a penalty.

That set up a final against the hosts, New Road, where the Lions produced another outstanding performance to claim a 2–0 victory. Anthony Pink opened the scoring with his first goal for the club after some excellent hold-up play from Huw Hartnett. The win was then sealed by a superb free-kick from Austin Page.

Overall, it was an excellent afternoon for the lads, who rose to the challenge against some very strong opposition and thoroughly deserved to come away as Shield winners.
